What is the average energy consumption of a 2 bedroom apartment?

Right now my girlfriend and I are considering getting an apartment together. We are looking at a 2 bedroom apartment that is about 1,300 sq feet. We live in Houston, Tx (inside the beltway on the south for those of you from around here).

We live with our parents and know nothing about paying bills. Of course they do not approve of our choice and we all are on an understanding lol. We do not want to ask them for any advice or help and we can do this on our own. We both work and are in school and handle our finances very well. Still, we will exhaust all other resources and Yahoo! ANSWERS seems a great place to start. Our main concern if any is our energy consumption. So...

1. What is the average energy consumption of 2 people in a 2 bedroom apartment? Specifically an apartment that is 1,300 sq ft in Houston, Tx. and can I have the usage in kilowatts?

2. What alternative energy does Houston, Tx have to offer?

3. Can you make an apartment green?

4. Any other advice on saving money in an apartment

I run a 75 unit condo complex in the Caribbean so I have TONS of electrical use data.....for A/C in the summer up there and heat in the winter, as a wild guess, you'll be using 1000-1200 kWh a month
( depends on what you use for heat in the apartment gas hot air, gas hot water radiators, electric air etc etc ). I think electric is 12 cents a kWh up there so do the math

It also depends on how the building was constructed, how old how well maintained....many places include utilities in the rent because they don't have separate meters....and how much "green" you can do is a function of what the landlord lets you do!

Try out this website:

http://www.myfootprint.org/en/

It tells you your carbon footprint as well as telling you a ton of ideas to be more eco-friendly.

I would just keep track of your energy usage by either looking at your utility bill, or just looking daily at your power meter. My wife and I use power strips on everything and just turn them all off when we go to bed.

Good luck to you guys!
